MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES THROUGH FILM

This is an opportunity to reach across the divide and to appreciate the diversity of human culture and perspective. The course aims to build understanding of a region, founded upon ancient cultures, and today challenged by internal conflicts and an evolving relationship with the West. Topics include European and American imperialism in the Middle East, the rise of terrorism the wars in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Israel and Palestine, relations with Iran, and explorations into Middle Eastern cultures, gender roles, Islamic religion, and art. Lectures, readings, discussions and films will require critical thinking, openness, and empathy.
